I have no idea about it but you have to ask your problem to any good mathematician.

Default Choosing decision variables

Examine the examples in that (excellent) text very closely. Ask yourself "What policy decision -- if the exercise were a real business decision -- would you, as the boss, be called upon to make?" Example: how much of the advertising budget will be allocated to newspapers, to radio, and to television? That would account for 3 decision variables.

Default IE Job Description

Hello,

Here in Romania there are not many IE's. Actually I don't no any. Are there
persons who perform only work measurement? Here we have "work measurement technicians" for this job. What exactly does an IE do? How does a job description look like for an IE? To become an IE you have to attend a certain University or are there only some courses that you have to attend? In our country for occupations like the one I mentioned earlier there are skill/competency/occupational standards which contain descriptions of what a work measurement techinician should do.

Thank you,
Elena

Default Operations Research

A very good place to begin is the web site http://www.informs.org/, the homepage of a professional society deeply devoted to this discipline. In terms of more formal study, seek out textbooks with "Management Science" (perhaps surprisingly) in the title -- I teach a graduate class in OR to business students using one of these books. Examples: "Introduction to Management Science with Spreadsheets" by Stevenson and Ozgur; or "Introduction to Management Science" by Bernard W. Taylor III. On the other hand, if you search for books with "operations research" or the more British "operational research" in the title, you will find books whose tone and approach is closer to the mathematician and farther from the manager pressed to make a key business decision. Hence your search can be fine-tuned to the learning approach you wish to take. If you use Microsoft Excel regularly (either 2003 or 2007 version), explore the add-on "Excel Solver."
